Some of Hartley's Most Common Birds

2008 Breeding Bird Survey

CHART 1: NRRI Breeding Bird Survey 2008

Click here for data from 2007

Census of individuals

CHART 2: This chart shows no apparent significant change in the number of birds: numbers of species and numbers of individual birds of each species. This is very satisfying, and indicates that no major change in environmental factors has reduced bird diversity and population numbers in the park. And as of this time, no major changes in the park environment are known over these same years.
The apparent decrease or increase in numbers of any one species probably reflects yearly differences in weather at the time of the censuses, and other factors that were not studied in or out of the park. Certainly, the chickadee, redstart, ovenbird & mourning warbler data so far may indicate real trends in numbers of these individuals in the park. It will take several or more years of data to show with more certainty any trends.

Veery

MAP 1: Every year, Veerys are found in all areas and vegetation covers in the park except in the big pine plantation northwest of Rock Knob;  there is not easily seen any important changes from year to year in their distribution and activity
 in the park.
Veerys are the only one of the thrushes not limited by the significantly small size of Hartley Park & by the park’s poor connection to large forest areas outside the park. Over recent years only several Hermit Thrushes were heard
in the park in the breeding seasons.

MAP 2: Ovenbirds show consistent general distribution from year to year in upland vegetation cover types.  Also each year they weren’t found in the central interiors of the larger pine plantations.
