Banding Birds at Hartley

This page features data gathered in 2010, with a link to data gathered in 2004-2007. We continue to band birds and gather data.

Banding Class

Mist nets are set up by trained HNCstaff for groups that come for bird classes. Birds are carefully removed from the nets or cages, then placed in small breathable bags, brought to a table where they are banded, measured and classified as the children observe the process. Then the birds are released to the outside, unharmed by the experience.

In the bird feeder area, live traps (potter traps) are often used, especially is weather is cooler. Some banding has also been done outside of classes to add more information to the banding databases of the Audubon society.

WHY BAND BIRDS?

The data collected here and elsewhere around the world as banded birds are recaptured by trained and licensed banders is used by bird ecologists in keeping track of bird species population sizes, locations, and movements in North America and elsewhere. Many species are decreasing in numbers.
