The high numbers of individuals in 2010 is due the large numbers of Chickadees and Crows and the large (100 individuals) flock of Bohemian Waxwings that happened to come across our observers (or vice versa !). |

With the following exceptions, the Duluth total area counts did not include “city species”: starling, rock pigeon, house sparrow that have not been seen inside Hartley Park, except perhaps along its boundaries. Also excluded from the Duluth data for this comparison, are species that require open water: ducks, gulls, mergansers and others. The kingfisher was observed in the park this year and in other years when Tischer Creek was still open during the count. As in previous years, with the same exclusions as above, the data from the park resembles the data from the Duluth count. Also as in previous years, there are more species noted in the total Duluth area than in the park, no doubt to the much larger area sampled and larger numbers of observers in the Duluth count. Hartley Park’s area is only about one square mile. The species observed above in the Duluth part of the count but not in the park, are often seen in the park at non-count times. See the 2009 count data for more of such species. |
