Evidence of Fire at Hartley

The Cloquet fire of 1918 probably burned out most of the area of what is now Hartley Park. No trees that we have done corings on show any evidence of that particular fire, although some cores showed evidence of fires in 1926 or 1934.

That leads us to believe that most of the trees that experienced that fire were killed and as a result do not remain to give us evidence. It is possible that some may have survived the fire, and we simply haven't found and cored them yet.

Below is some further evidence of fires in the park.

In the late 1930's about 1000 seven foot holes were dug in Hartley Park by a federal work project. From these, the depths of soil layers was determined.

This soil texture survey described the surface humus layers of large areas of the park as "burned out", and areas of the forests as "sparse".
