All buildings have an impact on the environment. They consume natural resources when constructed. Pollution is generated when building materials are manufactured. The building's energy use also causes environmental impacts. "Green building" means minimizing the environmental effects of building. Green building requires integrating environmental values into the decision making process during design and construction. Given our interest in environmental quality and education, our desire to make the new Hartley Nature Center facility a green building came naturally. However, in many instances, we learned that it is difficult to find and integrate environmentally sensitive options. The fact sheet, slide presentation, links and additional web pages provide a comprehensive look at our green building strategies. We were able to integrate a number of sustainable design features, including: renewable energy, energy conservation, use of recycled and non-toxic materials, and construction using Forest Stewardship Council certified wood. If you have questions or would like a tour of the building, call 218-724-6735. The facility is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for self-guided tours.
